Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical Surgical – Neuro

Job Details

The position requires a dedicated Registered Nurse to provide care primarily for stroke patients, as well as those undergoing neurosurgery and managing various neuro diagnoses, including epilepsy and traumatic and non-traumatic subdural hematomas.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor patient vitals and provide appropriate care based on individual needs.
  • Perform IV starts and telemetry monitoring, including interpretation and management of dysrhythmias.
  • Participate in patient assessments and care planning.
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed.
  • Float to other Medical Surgical and Telemetry areas as required, which may include COVID care units.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience, with at least 1 year of direct Medical Surgical experience.
  • Traveler candidates must have completed at least 2 successful contracts prior to application; first-time travelers will not be accepted.
  • Current certifications: BCLS, NIH, NIHSS; ACLS preferred but not required.
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start for this specialty.

Scheduling Information

  • Shifts are 12-hour nights with a schedule of 3 shifts per week.
  • Travelers are required to work every other weekend and may need to float to other units as necessary.
  • All required time off (RTO) must be arranged prior to booking and cannot be worked out onsite; additional RTO may result in contract changes.
  • Standard patient to nurse ratio of 1:6.
  • Orientation duration is 36 hours.
  • Scrubs: Navy color.

Patient Demographics

Primary patient focus includes those experiencing strokes and those with various neuroconditions, as well as post-neurosurgery patients.

Unit Information

  • Daily census of approximately 42 with a total of 43 available beds.
  • Unit utilizes PYXIS and EPIC for medication and patient management.
  • Special procedures include operating within a 4-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU), with training provided to qualified nurses.
