Registered Nurse (RN) – Perioperative

Definition of Position: The Registered Nurse specializing in perioperative nursing practice during the intraoperative surgical experience is responsible for delivering safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care in the operating room and other areas of perioperative services for all patient populations. The perioperative nurse acts as the patient advocate and oversees any personnel assigned to them. The position requires availability for on-call duty on a regularly scheduled rotation.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Accept responsibility for the direction, control, and planning of an activity.
  • Make evaluations and decisions based on measurable or verifiable criteria.
  • Work independently to implement the plan of care by:
    • Protecting patients from injuries caused by extraneous objects and other sources.
    • Performing accounting procedures to prevent unintended retained surgical items.
    • Ensuring that procedures are performed on the correct site, side, and level.
    • Managing patient specimens according to organizational policies.
    • Communicating patient status to relevant parties throughout the continuum of care.
    • Administering medications safely and correctly.
    • Maintaining patients’ wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels.
    • Ensuring the status of patients’ various systems and fluid balances are at or above baseline levels.
    • Performing interventions to protect patients from surgical site infections.
    • Upholding patients’ rights, dignity, and privacy.
    • Providing age-specific, culturally competent, and ethical care within legal standards.
    • Ensuring consistent and comparable care across settings.
  • Document nursing care accurately, completely, and legibly.
  • Collaborate effectively with other disciplines as applicable.
  • Utilize problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to nurture effective work relationships.
  • Maintain required competencies and pursue professional growth by participating in a professional organization.
  • Act as a patient advocate while maintaining confidentiality of health information.
  • Support organizational mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures.
  • Participate in required education programs as applicable to the position.
  • Float to other departments as needed, based on qualifications, prior to core staff being floated.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Required: Associate of Science in Nursing.
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Required: Current RN license in Oregon, BLS, ACLS, PALS Certification, TNCC.
  • Preferred: CNOR, Peri-op 101, CRASE training (if assignment extends beyond 6 months).

Experience:

  • Required: None.
  • Preferred: Previous RN circulator experience, Peri-op 101 course, scrub experience.
