Phlebotomist

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Phlebotomy Supervisor, Assistant Phlebotomy Supervisor, and the Director of Laboratory Services, the Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood specimens for analysis and processing requisitions into the Laboratory Computer System.

Job Functions

• Effectively collect blood specimens from patients of all age groups, including newborns, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatric populations.
• Prioritize and respond to stat requests, ensuring prompt attention to affected patients and notifying department personnel accordingly.
• Maintain accurate documentation by logging activities, including check-in and check-out times in nursing books.
• Perform accessioning duties, ensuring patient data is correctly identified, test requests are entered accurately, and all specimens are properly labeled in accordance with laboratory protocols.
• Assist with the transportation of specimen samples between departments as necessary.
• Support the specimen processing department by assisting with incoming specimens and staffing as needed.
• Travel to nursing homes, patient homes requiring home care, and satellite facilities for blood collection as required.
• Assist with general operations, covering understaffed areas, initiating glucose tolerance tests, and handling phone inquiries.
• Adhere to departmental and hospital policies and procedures to ensure compliance.
• Promote service excellence in all interactions with patients and staff.
• Maintain a safe and organized work environment by following all safety practices and regulatory procedures. Participate in quality improvement and safety initiatives as appropriate.
• Support and uphold patient rights to care, privacy, and respect.
• Complete other duties as assigned on occasion.
