Job Overview

The Interventional Radiology/Cardiology Radiologic Technologist plays a vital role in supporting diagnostic and interventional procedures through expert operation of fluoroscopic imaging equipment, maintaining sterile techniques, and coordinating procedural workflows. This position collaborates closely with physicians, nurses, and an interdisciplinary team to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. The technologist is responsible for demonstrating advanced technical competence in procedural imaging, radiation safety, sterile field maintenance, and hemodynamic monitoring, while adhering to departmental protocols and regulatory standards.

Essential Job Functions

• Imaging Role:
  • Operate fluoroscopic and radiographic imaging systems during diagnostic and interventional procedures (e.g., vascular, non-vascular, cardiac catheterization).
  • Perform image post-processing and ensure the images are sent to PACS.
  • Maintain high standards of image quality, positioning, and equipment settings based on procedural requisites.
  • Verify imaging readiness, room setup, and equipment functionality prior to each case.
  • Adhere strictly to ALARA principles and all radiation safety policies.
• Scrub Role:
  • Function as the scrub technologist using sterile techniques to assist physicians during procedures.
  • Prepare and organize sterile instruments, guidewires, catheters, sheaths, and procedural trays.
  • Anticipate physician needs and respond quickly during critical moments.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with vascular anatomy and device selection.
• Monitor Role:
  • Record hemodynamic data and procedural events as the primary monitor technologist.
  • Communicate allergy considerations during the timeout and ensure accurate documentation of procedural details.
  • Operate and troubleshoot physiological monitoring systems, documenting all supplies used and procedural findings.
• Peri-Procedure Support:
  • Assist with patient preparation, positioning, and connecting monitoring equipment.
  • Collaborate with nursing staff to verify allergies and other clinical factors.
  • Carry out patient identification, procedure verification, and timeout processes according to institutional policy.
  • Provide support during sedation and monitor patient condition during procedures.
• Department Support:
  • Assist with supply management, including restocking and tracking expiration dates.
  • Support room turnover efficiency through post-procedure cleanup and preparation for the next case.
  • Perform equipment checks to ensure proper functioning before use.
  • Document malfunctioning equipment and assist with service calls as necessary.

Qualifications

• Education:
  • Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology program.
  • BS in Radiologic Science/Medical Imaging preferred.
• Licenses and Certifications:
  • Current state licensure issued by the appropriate board.
  • ARRT certification, RT(R); current BLS, ACLS certification (or within 6 months of hire).
  • Certifications specific to clinical specialty preferred (e.g., RCIS, NIH Stroke Scale).
• Experience:
  • Minimum one year of experience in Interventional Radiology and/or Cath Lab.
  • Preferred three years of experience in a similar role.
• Other Skills:
  • Ability to provide care for patients of diverse backgrounds.
  • Bilingual and/or English-Spanish speaking preferred.
  • Capacity to work independently and make evaluative decisions.
