Break Nurse

About the Position

This position is for a Break Nurse, responsible for providing nursing support in a high-acuity environment. This role requires strong clinical skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks, and effective communication with both patients and staff.

Unit Information

• Labor & Delivery Beds: 34 total (15 labor rooms, 12 antepartum, 4 OB ED, 3 OR)
• Post Partum Beds: 18 beds
• Monthly Deliveries: Up to 300 deliveries
• Patient Types: High acuity cases including hypertension, magnesium administration, C-sections, preterm labor, and postpartum hemorrhage
• Patient Ratios:
  • 1:1 for active labor
  • 1:2 for non-active laboring
  • 1:2-3 for antepartum, depending on acuity

Key Responsibilities

• Provide nursing support during high-risk deliveries and manage care for mothers and newborns.
• Assist in triaging OB patients and performing essential procedures such as cervical checks and fetal monitoring strip interpretation.
• Serve as a second set of hands during deliveries and ensure recovery of birthing patients and newborns.
• Collaborate with nursing and medical staff to provide optimal patient care.

Required Qualifications

• Current certifications: BLS, NRP, Intermediate FHM (AWHONN)
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in labor and delivery nursing, with preference given to candidates with prior travel experience.
• Strong clinical skills in labor management and delivery of high-risk OB patients.
• Experience with EPIC and high-acuity patient management.

Support on the Unit

• CNA support for transports, restocking, and assisting in OR
• Scrub Techs who are LPNs and NRP certified
• Receptionist/HUC support available
• Resource RN support may be available based on staffing needs
• 24/7 respiratory therapy available for high-risk deliveries
• Anesthesia support during designated hours

Orientation and Scheduling

• Comprehensive orientation program including 2 weeks in-unit and 1 week of independent practice.
• Scheduling includes rotating weekends and holiday expectations.
• Shifts: 0700-1930, 1900-0730

• Scrub colors are provided by the facility and scrubs should not be worn outside the facility.
