Interventional Radiology/Cardiology Registered Nurse (RN)
Position Overview
The Interventional Radiology/Cardiology RN delivers specialized nursing care to patients undergoing a variety of invasive procedures such as angiography, embolization, cardiac catheterization, and other minimally invasive interventions. This role emphasizes collaboration with physicians and the interdisciplinary team to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. The RN acts as a patient advocate and is responsible for directing and supervising assigned personnel. This position may require on-call availability for the Interventional Unit as needed.
Essential Job Functions
- Nursing/Circulator Role:
- Administer medications as ordered, including anticoagulants, vasoactive agents, contrast, and emergency drugs.
- Maintain sterile technique and assist with procedures as necessary.
- Act as a patient advocate and anticipate the needs of the interventionalist.
- Recognize and respond rapidly to complications (e.g., arrhythmias, bleeding, reactions to contrast, stroke alerts, cardiac arrest).
- Contrast Allergy Management Collaboration:
- Collaborate with Radiologic Technologists and physicians to identify and address contrast allergies or sensitivities.
- Participate in pre-procedure discussions regarding appropriate contrast agents.
- Ensure allergy considerations are communicated during the timeout.
- Moderate Sedation Role:
- Monitor patients for moderate sedation, without engaging in tasks that may compromise continual assessment.
- Verify ASA classification and consult anesthesia for ASA scores of IV or greater.
- Administer moderate sedation per protocol and monitor vital signs and patient response.
- Scrub Role:
- Function as the scrub technologist using sterile techniques to assist physicians during procedures.
- Prepare and organize sterile instruments, guidewires, catheters, and procedural trays.
- Anticipate physician needs and respond timely during critical moments.
- Monitor Role:
- Act as the primary monitor technologist, documenting hemodynamic data and procedural events.
- Ensure accurate documentation of all supplies, implants, and procedural details.
- Communicate real-time findings to the procedural team.
- Team Support Peri-Procedure:
- Assist with patient preparation and positioning, connecting monitoring equipment.
- Verify allergies, NPO status, renal function, and other relevant clinical factors.
- Conduct patient identification, procedure verification, and timeout processes in compliance with institutional policy.
- Manage sheath pulls and vascular access as needed.
- Department Support:
- Assist with supply management, inventory tracking, and room turnover efficiency.
- Help ensure devices are cleaned, charged, and stored appropriately.
Qualifications
- Education:
- Required: Graduate of an accredited nursing program with evidence of continuing education in the relevant specialty.
- Desired: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- Experience:
- Required: Minimum of one year experience in critical care, emergency, catheterization lab, or interventional radiology.
- Desired: At least three years of experience in Interventional Radiology or Cath Lab, along with conscious sedation training and monitor role experience.
- Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations:
- Current RN license in the state of Oregon.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications.
- Certifications specific to clinical specialty preferred (e.g., RCIS, NIH Stroke
