Emergency Room Nurse (RN)

Unit Information

The Emergency Room (ER) operates as a Trauma Level IV facility, with STEMI Level I and Stroke Level II designations. The team is actively working towards achieving Level III Trauma designation and is currently managing Level III patients.

• Number of Beds/Trauma Bays: 45 beds, including 4 hallway beds, 4 vertical rooms, 1 trauma bay, 1 resuscitation bay, and 1 cardiac room.
• Fast Track: Vertical space with rapid assessment capabilities.
• Triage Area: A separate triage area is available; travelers are not involved in triaging.
• Patient Holding Areas: Patient holds are intermixed within the ER.
• Psych/Seclusion Rooms: 4 psych rooms included within the 45 beds, with 1:1 sitters for these patients.
• Security: In-house security available 24/7 within the ER.

Position Overview

As an Emergency Room Nurse, you will be an essential part of a dynamic team dedicated to providing high-quality care in a fast-paced environment. You will treat an average of 170 patients daily, including both pediatric and adult populations, focusing on a variety of high acuity cases, such as strokes and STEMIs.

Responsibilities

• Assess and triage patients in a timely manner.
• Administer medications and manage common drips such as Nicardipine, Propofol, Fentanyl, Norepinephrine, Nitro, Versed, and Precedex.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including physicians and advanced practice providers.
• Perform appropriate interventions for emergency conditions, ensuring patient safety and comfort.
• Maintain accurate documentation and effectively communicate with patients and families.

Qualifications

• Must possess a valid nursing license as a Registered Nurse (RN).
• Required certifications include BLS, ACLS, TNCC, PALS, and ENPC.
• A minimum of 2.5 years of Emergency Department experience is required.
• Experience from a larger urban hospital setting is preferred; trauma experience is also preferred.

Nurse-Patient Ratios

The nurse-to-patient ratio is between 1:4 to 1:5, ensuring optimal patient care.

Team and Support Structure

• Each shift will have at least one physician and one advanced practice provider (APP), with up to six providers available at peak times.
• A charge nurse is present on each shift and does not carry patient assignments.
• Certified nursing assistants (CNAs) and patient sitters are available, with a staffing ratio of 1:5 to 1:9.
• Respiratory therapists are available 24/7 to provide necessary interventions, including ABGs and breathing treatments.
• Registered Nurses are responsible for reading and interpreting telemetry.
• Phlebotomy services are provided by RNs and CNAs, in addition to designated phlebotomists.

Shifts and Scheduling

• 12-hour shifts available, with varying start times including morning and evening shifts.
• Weekend requirement is a minimum of 4 Saturdays/Sundays every 6 weeks.
• Holiday coverage is required as needed.
• No on-call or standby requirements.
• Floating to other emergency departments may occur, though it is rare.

Dress Code

The dress code is professional and clean, with no specific color requirements for scrubs.

Orientation

New hires will receive 1 shift of unit-specific orientation following hospital and Epic system training.
