Clinical Nurse

Job Summary

Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. The Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting, reporting and accountable to the Nurse Manager/Director.

Essential Duties

• Education:
  • Participates in identifying and meeting learning needs of self.
  • Attends education programs based on identified learning needs.
  • Utilizes patient education materials relevant to patient population, with assistance.
  • Assesses readiness to learn of the patient, family, and caregivers.
  • Evaluates the developmental level of the patient and factors affecting the ability to learn.
• Evaluation of Care:
  • Identifies expected patient outcomes.
  • Seeks guidance as needed in revising the plan of care.
  • Engages in discussions with interdisciplinary team members in evaluating patient care.
  • Communicates relevant information to promote continuity of care.
• Implementation:
  • Demonstrates competence in caring for patients with complex problems, considering physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety aspects of care.
  • Performs bedside point of care testing as required for the patient care plan.
  • Utilizes healthcare organization and nursing standards, policies, and procedures in care delivery.
  • Organizes and prioritizes care according to patient and family needs.
  • Consults with appropriate resources in a timely manner regarding complex care issues and those at high risk for discharge planning.
• Leadership:
  • With assistance, develops goals to promote professional growth or address limitations.
  • Achieves goals and objectives within the established time frame or renegotiates with supervisor.
  • Stays informed about activities that facilitate intra/interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Participates in unit goals and performance improvement activities.
  • Effectively uses communication systems.
  • Contributes to promoting cost-effective care.
  • Provides feedback to co-workers.
  • Is knowledgeable about public policy and regulatory guidelines affecting the health care environment.
  • Promotes a safe, clean, and secure environment for all.
• Patient Assessment:
  • Recognizes data from complex situations to determine care priorities, including appropriate physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs.
  • Synthesizes assessment data into meaningful information for communication with others.
  • Assesses and anticipates discharge needs of individual patients and families.
  • Develops relationships with families to enhance their ability to advocate for their needs and the patient’s needs.
• Planning:
  • Collaborates with patient and family to prepare or update the plan of care.
  • Utilizes available multidisciplinary resources in care planning.
  • Begins using a full range of communication to convey planning.
  • Identifies and addresses cultural and ethnic issues in patient care planning.
  • Demonstrates the ability to prioritize tasks for patients with complex issues.
• Research:
  • Reads relevant journals that contain applicable studies or articles.
  • Brings ideas and questions to the staff for assessment of applicability.

Education

• Required Education: Nursing Diploma or ADN/ASN from an accredited school of Nursing.
