Transfusion Services/Blood Bank Supervisor

This position requires a highly skilled individual to oversee the daily operations of Transfusion Services/Blood Bank. The supervisor will play an integral role in ensuring compliance with regulatory blood bank standards and the effective management of personnel in their assigned sections.

Responsibilities:

• Provide daily supervision of laboratory testing personnel performing high, moderate, and waived complexity tests.
• Address technical issues by being accessible for consultation during testing hours through on-site, telephone, or electronic means.
• Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and standards set by regulatory agencies, including CLIA, TJC, CAP, AABB, etc.
• Plan, organize, and coordinate activities for assigned sections and shifts.
• Maintain accurate attendance records for all associates in the department.
• Assist in budget maintenance by conducting monthly analyses and reporting on expenses.
• Develop and maintain procedural manuals for all tests performed, ensuring updates and reviews are conducted as needed.
• Enforce safety policies and procedures within the laboratory.
• Research and implement new methodologies, instrumentation, and techniques as directed.
• Monitor test analysis and ensure acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
• Ensure corrective actions are implemented for any deviations from established performance standards.
• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, performing minor repairs as necessary and coordinating preventive maintenance.
• Prepare and submit administrative and technical reports as needed.
• Order and manage inventory for all necessary supplies and reagents.
• Train new technologists and technicians on standard procedures and techniques.
• Conduct in-service education for assigned sections and shifts.
• Evaluate personnel performance and provide input on personnel decisions including hiring and disciplinary actions.
• Participate in proficiency testing surveys and maintain records of results.
• Utilize and maintain knowledge of Laboratory Information Systems.
• Adapt patient assessment and care methods to meet the unique needs of diverse patient populations.
• Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
• Stay updated on advancements in Medical Technology through continued education and professional engagement.

Job Requirements:

Education/Skills

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education in chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution is required.

Experience

• A minimum of 5 years of experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Laboratory Scientist is required.
• At least 5 years of full-time primary experience in the specific section of responsibility is mandatory.

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

• Certification as MLS from ASCP, AMT, AAB, or HEW/HHS is required.

Work Schedule:

Full-time position comprising 5 days of 8-hour shifts. Flexibility with scheduling is necessary as work may occasionally be required before 8 a.m., after 5 p.m., or on weekends.
