Registered Nurse (RN) – Med Surg/Telemetry

Job Description

As a Registered Nurse, you will work under the supervision of the unit Supervisor, Manager, or Director. You will be responsible for delivering patient care through a comprehensive nursing process that includes assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Your role will involve providing direction and guidance to ancillary personnel while adhering to professional nursing standards and operating instructions. You will consistently strive for excellence in service, contributing positively to the patient and family experience.

Primary Job Responsibilities

• Assess patients’ physical, psychological, and social dimensions upon admission, completing a written assessment within the specified time frame.
• Identify patient needs and develop a care plan based on comprehensive assessments, initiating it within 24 hours of admission.
• Implement care plans and document effectiveness, updating the plans as necessary or at least every 24 hours.
• Establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients and families.
• Promote patient independence through education on conditions, medications, self-care skills, and by addressing questions.
• Ensure quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards and health outcomes, making recommendations for necessary adjustments as per care standards.
• Utilize multidisciplinary team strategies to resolve patient problems and needs.
• Protect patients and staff by following infection-control policies and procedures, including proper medication administration and storage.
• Maintain effective communication among nursing teams and physicians regarding patient care and needs.
• Demonstrate leadership skills through effective delegation, communication, and evaluation of team members.
• Monitor and recognize changes in patient status and provide appropriate interventions and documentation.
• Provide ongoing education to patients and families based on daily assessments of disease processes and recovery expectations.
• Prioritize care based on individual patient needs and demonstrate a focus on patient education.
• Initiate referrals in collaboration with case management to meet discharge needs.
• Participate in continuing education and unit/hospital-wide committees aimed at performance improvement, attending a minimum of eight staff meetings annually.
• Communicate identified unit issues following the appropriate chain of command and actively engage in problem-solving efforts.
• Uphold patient safety standards to create a secure environment and mitigate risks of adverse occurrences.
• Support the mission, vision, and values of the organization by following established standards, policies, and procedures.
• Demonstrate age-appropriate care knowledge for patients and adapt care based on growth and development principles.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of Med Surg experience.
• Experience floating to PCU.
• Proficient in telemetry and capable of reading and interpreting heart rhythms.
• Required vaccinations, including COVID-19 vaccine with allowable exemptions.
• Successful completion of a dysrhythmia test prior to patient care duties.
• Active American Heart Association certifications in BLS and ACLS.
• Valid and active Michigan nursing license.
