ICU Registered Nurse (RN)
Job Overview
The ICU Registered Nurse plays a critical role in providing high-quality care to patients in the Intensive Care Unit. This position requires proficiency in critical care nursing and the ability to manage complex patient needs effectively.
Shift and Schedule
- 12-hour shifts (Day/Night rotating)
- 4 shifts per week (48 hours)
- Weekend rotation required every other weekend
- Holiday coverage of 2/3 holidays may be necessary
Unit Information
- 5-bed ICU with 2 IMC beds available in the hallway
- Nurse-to-patient ratios: 2:1 for ICU; 3:1 IMC, depending on patient acuity
- Common diagnoses include: respiratory failure, septic shock, detoxification, DKA, atrial fibrillation, and arrhythmias requiring pacing
Essential Skills and Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in an ICU setting
- Certifications required: ACLS and BLS
- Experience floating to Med/Surg units is mandatory
- Preference for candidates with Critical Access or Trauma Level 3 or 4 experience, especially in rural settings
- Comfortable managing ventilators and associated equipment
Responsibilities
- Administer medications and titrate intravenous drips (e.g., Levophed, propofol, cardizem, esmolol, insulin)
- Collaborate with the healthcare team, including Hospitalist and Intensivist services
- Utilize resources effectively, understanding the limitations of on-site services, such as an absence of an IV team and reliance on RT for respiratory care
- Read and interpret telemetry strips, working alongside Tele/Monitor Technicians (available from 0700 to 1900 daily)
- Participate in unit orientation and ongoing training
Orientation and Training
- Structured orientation program with an 8-hour computer education day on the first day
- Shadowing for 4 hours followed by a 12-hour shift on the second day
- Independent working on the third day
Additional Information
All personnel are expected to clock in and out at the facility. Flexibility in schedules may be required based on unit needs.
