Registered Nurse (RN) – Behavioral Health

Job Details

This position involves working in a Behavioral Health Inpatient Unit, focusing on the care and support of adults and geriatric patients with a range of mental health diagnoses. The job requires a commitment to providing high-quality care in a fast-paced environment.

Schedule

  • Shift: Nights (18:45 – 07:15)
  • Days: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday only
  • 36-48 hours of work can be offered
  • Weekend scheduling available, with block schedules

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients in the inpatient Behavioral Health Unit.
  • Monitor patient vital signs and manage medication administration.
  • Utilize de-escalation techniques and crisis interventions as needed.
  • Maintain patient safety through effective milieu management and observation protocols.
  • Collaborate with the therapy team and support staff to promote patient well-being.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a relevant field.
  • Experience with inpatient care in locked units and management of various mental health disorders.
  • Proficient in administering medications, monitoring blood glucose levels, and interpreting lab values.
  • Knowledge of antianxiety medication, antidepressants, antipsychotics, and mood stabilizers.
  • Certification in MOAB (Management of Aggressive Behavior) is required.
  • Ability to work well within a team and adapt to various patient needs and care demands.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with congenital and developmental disorders.
  • Skills in starting and maintaining IVs.

Unit Information

The Behavioral Health Unit is divided across two floors, and staff are expected to rotate between areas of varying acuity. Team members include psych techs who assist with vital sign checks and milieu management. Lead psych techs are available to support de-escalation efforts. Nursing support is provided by a nurse manager, assistant nurse manager, or house supervisor onsite, with virtual clinical nursing support available 24/7. A dedicated therapy team conducts group sessions every day.

Orientation and Training

  • 32-hour unit orientation is required.
  • Availability for daily classes during the first week of hospital orientation is mandatory.

Special Equipment and Systems

  • Utilization of ObservSmart for patient monitoring.
  • Personal panic alarms and public safety protocols are in place for enhanced security.
  • Familiarity with EPIC for documentation, Pyxis for medication management, and SBAR communication protocols is expected.

Scrubs

Navy blue scrubs are required for this position.
