Surgical Technologist

Job Description

The Surgical Technologist assists during surgical procedures by maintaining the integrity of a sterile surgical field and providing necessary instrumentation to the surgical team. This role involves participating in unit activities to assure high levels of quality related to patient care and functions under the direction of a Registered Nurse.

Essential Job Functions

• Demonstrates expertise in sterile and aseptic techniques, combining knowledge of human anatomy and surgical procedures with the implementation of tools and technologies in the performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
• Maintains and inspects all surgical items for proper packaging, processing, and integrity, ensuring the operating room environment is safe and equipment functions properly.
• Monitors the sterile field for potential contamination and initiates or notifies the need for corrective action under supervision.
• Works towards competency in Tier 1 surgical cases.
• Maintains flexibility while contributing to individualized, ongoing patient care within the scope of practice.
• Communicates effectively with the perioperative team, actively participating in the Time Out Process including briefings and debriefings.
• Assists the team with patient transports, room turnovers, and preparation.
• Models professional behavior by staying current with new technologies and procedures relevant to instrumentation and equipment.
• Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
• Adheres to the principles of a Just Culture and performs other duties as assigned, maintaining HIPAA compliance.

Minimum Qualifications

• Completion of a Certified Surgical Technologist program and/or Licensed Surgical Technologist required.
• Licensure as a Surgical Technologist in the state is required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by the American Heart Association is required.
• Must possess computer skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, and complete online benefits enrollment within 90 days.
• Fluency in English is required, including reading, writing, and speaking.
