Interventional Radiology/Cardiology Registered Nurse (RN)

Definition of Position: The Interventional Radiology/Cardiology Registered Nurse (RN) provides specialized nursing care to patients undergoing invasive interventional procedures such as angiography, embolization, cardiac catheterization, and other minimally invasive interventions. This role involves collaborating with physicians and the interdisciplinary team to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. The RN is responsible for the direction and supervision of any personnel assigned to him/her and may provide on-call support as needed. The RN reports to the Unit Nurse Manager, House Supervisor, or RN Team Leader.

Essential Job Functions:

• Nursing/Circulator Role:
  • Administer medications as ordered, including anticoagulants, vasoactive agents, contrast, and emergency drugs.
  • Maintain sterile technique and assist with procedures as required.
  • Act as the patient advocate and anticipate the needs of the interventionalist.
  • Quickly recognize and respond to complications such as arrhythmia, bleeding, contrast reactions, stroke alerts, and cardiac arrest.
• Contrast Allergy Management:
  • Collaborate with Radiologic Technologists and physicians to identify and manage contrast allergies or sensitivities.
  • Participate in pre-procedure discussions regarding appropriate contrast agents.
  • Ensure allergy considerations are communicated during the timeout process.
• Moderate Sedation Role:
  • Monitor patients receiving moderate sedation, ensuring continuous assessment without engaging in other tasks.
  • Verify ASA classification and consult anesthesia for higher ASA scores.
  • Provide moderate sedation according to protocol and monitor vital signs and patient responses.
• Scrub Role:
  • Function as a scrub technologist using sterile techniques to assist physicians during procedures.
  • Prepare and organize sterile instruments and procedural trays.
  • Anticipate physician needs and respond accurately during critical moments.
• Monitor Role:
  • Record hemodynamic data and procedural events as the primary monitor technologist.
  • Ensure allergy considerations are communicated and documented accurately.
  • Operate and troubleshoot physiological monitoring systems, documenting all supplies and details accurately.
• Support to the Team Peri-Procedure:
  • Assist with patient preparation, positioning, and monitoring equipment setup.
  • Collaborate with the clinical team to verify patient details and perform necessary safety protocols.
  • Manage vascular access and perform sheath pulls as needed.
• Department Support:
  • Assist in managing supplies, ensuring rooms are restocked and organized.
  • Contribute to room turnover efficiency by aiding in cleanup and preparing for subsequent procedures.
  • Ensure proper storage and maintenance of medical devices and equipment.

Qualifications:

• Education:
  • Required: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • Desired: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
• Experience:
  • Required: At least one year of experience in critical care, emergency, cath lab, or interventional radiology.
  • Desired: At least three years of experience in Interventional Radiology or Cath Lab with moderate sedation training.
• Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations:
  • Current RN license in the State; current BLS and ACLS certification.
  • Certifications specific to areas of clinical specialty preferred (e.g., RCIS, NIH Stroke Scale).
  • IV certification.
