Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)

Position Summary: Provides information for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease by conducting medical laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analyses following established accreditation guidelines and quality control standards.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Determines normal and abnormal components of body fluids by conducting chemical analyses of blood, urine, spinal fluids, and gastric juices.
  • Analyzes blood cells by counting and identifying cells, utilizing microscopic techniques and procedures.
  • Prepares blood, plasma, and platelets for transfusions through blood group, type, and compatibility testing.
  • Processes, reads, and reports cultures from various sources, including antibiotic sensitivities and other microbiology procedures.
  • Ensures the operation of laboratory analyzers, spectrophotometers, colorimeters, flame photometers, and other equipment by calibrating, completing preventive maintenance requirements, troubleshooting malfunctions, and maintaining equipment inventories.
  • Maintains laboratory supply inventory by checking stock levels, anticipating needs, placing orders, and verifying receipt of supplies.
  • Conserves laboratory resources by using equipment and supplies efficiently to achieve job results.
  • Provides information on medical technology by answering questions and requests from colleagues and healthcare providers.
  • Prepares reports of technological findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing relevant information.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and participating in professional societies.
  • Complies with established Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement (QA/QI) standards.
  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment, adhering to infection control, hazardous waste protocols, and other related policies.
  • Recognizes problems, identifies the causes, and implements appropriate solutions.
  • Orients and trains new employees as necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as required and directed.

Qualifications:

  • 1+ year of MLS experience required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • ASCP certification required.

Weekend and Holiday Requirements:

Availability to work during weekends and holidays is required.
